Please love me love me love me

2021 . for piano trio . 9′ .

One of my worst traits is wanting to be liked. When I began thinking about different directions to
take in writing this piano trio for the Norfolk New Music Workshop, my first thoughts were, “what
will make a good impression?” Ironically, this is the one thing I should definitely not focus on when
composing a new work. My process can’t be tied to imaginary feelings of approval or disapproval yet
to be voiced. Nevertheless, when I start writing a new piece, I often gravitate towards thoughts of “what will ‘they’ like?” (“They,” the imaginary throng of listeners / performers / audience members /
faceless bystanders en masse). I decided to make this trio about the toxic need within myself to be
loved loved loved constantly. As much as I wish I were free from the need to be liked, I still really do hope you love it. And I hope you love me. Please. Love me love me love me.
